Be a A Part of Something Great
My name is Kristina Kay Brown. I am a red-headed, cheerleading, violin-playing, debater with type-1 diabetes. My favorite food is green beans, and I love strawberry-flavored tootsie rolls. I snore a little bit (ok a lot), and I sing in the shower. If I had a theme song it would be “You Ain’t Seen Nothin Yet†by Bachman Turner Overdrive. I am the oldest of 8 children; my youngest siblings are 8 month old twins. I love them, but I have to wake up incredibly early in the morning to get my homework done and avoid the circus that is my home. I live in El Dorado, Kansas. Everybody shows up for every football game, even though we haven’t won in three years. We have a little Diner called “Suzie’s Chili Parlor†where President Obama once ate lunch. We also have a maximum security prison where criminals like BTK live and one hospital where I spend a lot of my time volunteering. El Dorado is one big dysfunctional family. I love it: but, it’s time for me to leave. I am thankful for my dysfunctional family-the actual one and the figurative one-and the stories it enables me to tell. But, I want to shape the ending to my story, and I think I can find the best material in a new environment.
Since I was very young, I have aspired to do something amazing. While I did not originally know this is the way my life would unravel, I would not change much. Instead of starting my freshman year at Smith College next year, I will be taking a gap year as a result of unforeseeable circumstances. I do not want this time to be wasted. I have an entire year to do something that only I can do. It is my goal to raise enough funds to spend 6 months abroad to help those that have been less fortunate. I am working 40 hours a week in an attempt to make this a reality, but unfortunately it is still not enough. I need your help to raise $5,450. In addition to trip costs, your generosity will be used in full to assure adequate food, health supplies, time, and housing can reach those who need it. Be a part of something amazing and help me help those who need it. Thank you very much. |
